Research and developments led by North East pioneers makes it to International Standard

In May 2010, ISO (the worldwide International Standardisation Organisation) formally published a new standard (ISO-IEC-12905) that enables a smart card to be personalised so that when it interacts with another device it can configure that device to provide information and services in a bespoke way, in particular supporting consumers with special needs.

The standard is based upon research led by North East partners in the DISTINCT project (the DISTINCT ID)which was formally standardised as the eURIby theEuropean standards body CEN-ISSS and adopted in part by such schemes as ITSO (the UK’s interoperable transport smartcard organisation).

The DISTINCT project itself was a highly commended EU research project which was led by Professor Phil Blythe and colleagues at Newcastle University and comprised over 70 European partners.  During the five year lifetime of the project the partners deployed over 5 million citizen and transport smartcardswith a common architecture and the DISTINCT ID in: Rovaniemi, Helsinki, Espooand Vantaa (Finland); The City of Torino and Region of Piemento (Italy); The region of Zeeland (NL); Thessaloniki and the Region of Macedonia (Greece) and in the North East of England – including being responsible for the introduction of the Newcastle University Smartcard.

The first eURI CEN –ISSS workshop was chaired by Graham Jordan, who at the time worked at Newcastle City Council.  Much of the work on theITSO standard was co-ordinated by Peter Stoddart, also based in Newcastle.
